This is the “about” page of how 2007TopSongs came to be…
In early February of 2007 I was having breakfast with some friends and we were discussing the state of music today. We talked about artists, distribution channels, DRM, upcoming tours, our mp3 players, the role of the internet in music, and some topics related to the industry.
I was doing some keyword research, as I brought my laptop to breakfast, and noticed there were lots of searches being done for “top songs” and terms similar to that. I had been telling my friends for months that todays tools (wordpress, RSS, virtual hosting) made building websites a rather easy task. I checked some domains and noticed nobody owned 2007topsongs.com (why would they?) and decided to create a website to host my list of top songs for the year.
By the time we were done with breakfast I had the domain registered, web hosting activated, wordpress installed, and music theme added. After lunch I spent about an hour tweaking the website settings and then added the first post.
I had not planned it this way but the 2007 Van Halen Reunion Tour was announced the day before I setup the website, giving me a topic to discuss the first day. I love Van Halen so it was a perfect start for me.
I have been making some posts related to other tours and will continue to do so throughout the year. I’ve also added several pages of RSS related music content that I’ll be polishing up as I get the time to.
I am interested in hearing from others as to what you’d like to see happen with this website. My original intent was just to show my friends how fast you could launch a site using todays opensource tools. BTW: I’ll be doing an article on how I built the site (step by step) and will maybe create a short video on “how to” since I think there are plenty of opportunities for you to create great websites in short amounts of time.
It’s early February and I’m still figuring what to do here so please be patient. If you have suggestions or think something should be posted on this website, send me some info and let’s get it moving in the right direction.
